Rent a Car Podgorica Prices — What to Expect in 2026

If you're planning to rent a car in Podgorica, the first question that always comes up is the same—how much does it actually cost? Prices vary depending on the season, the type of vehicle, and the rental terms, but there are clear patterns worth knowing before you sign the contract.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Podgorica?

The car rental market in Podgorica covers a wide range — from small economy cars to more spacious SUV models. Estimated prices for 2026:

Vehicle type Price per day
Small car (hatchback) from €45
City car (sedan) from €55
SUV / crossover from €60
Van (8+1) from €110

These are prices without comprehensive insurance — more on that below.

What is included in the base price?

A standard lease agreement in Montenegro usually includes:

  • Third party (mandatory insurance) — always included in the price
  • Unlimited miles — at most reliable agencies
  • Gross profit — always check if the price includes VAT or not

What usually not Included in the base price:

  • Hull insurance — an additional cost, but we recommend it
  • Supplementary anti-theft protection
  • Child's seat — if you are traveling with small children
  • Second driver — some agencies charge an additional fee

Collision insurance — to get it or not?

This is a question that many skip, but they shouldn't. Montenegrin roads are generally good, but mountain roads, narrow passages through old towns, and summer traffic congestion on the coast carry a certain risk.

Comprehensive insurance eliminates financial liability in case of vehicle damage. Without it, even minor damage is your responsibility.

Our recommendation: Always get collision insurance, especially if you plan to drive towards Lovćen, Durmitor, or mountain roads.

Seasonal differences in prices

The rental price in Montenegro is not the same throughout the year. There are three distinct seasons:

Preseason (April — June): Prices are lower, there are no crowds, and the sea has been warm since June. Ideal for those who want value for their money.

Peak season (July — August): Highest demand, highest prices. Vehicles are booked weeks in advance. If you're planning to visit during this period, book as early as possible.

Postseason (September — October): One of the better options — prices are dropping, and Montenegro is still sunny and warm. September is in many ways an ideal month to visit.

Podgorica as a starting point — does it make sense?

Podgorica is the geographic center of Montenegro, making it an excellent starting point for excursions in all directions. Unlike the coast, Podgorica does not have a distinct season—vehicles are available year-round and prices are more stable.

If you're flying into Podgorica, renting a car in the city is a logical step. The sea is an hour to an hour and a half drive away, Lake Skadar is 45 minutes, and Kolašin and mountain Montenegro are two hours to the north.

What to look for when choosing an agency

Price is one factor, but not the only one. A few things worth checking:

Vehicle age — newer vehicles mean a lower risk of breakdown and a more pleasant ride. Ask about the year.

Conditions of comprehensive insurance — Some policies have a high deductible (the amount you pay out-of-pocket for a loss). Check how much it is.

Fuel Policy — most often “full — full”, which means you pick it up with a full tank and return it full.

Available 24/7 — important in case of a breakdown or accident on the road.
